Visiting Boscastle in Cornwall

Visiting Boscastle in Cornwall

As my portrait in the About section of this site might reveal, I’ve been taking photographs for a long time! Back in the far distant past, those were black and white film that I used to develop and print myself and then I migrated to color slides, some of which I still printed in my makeshift bathroom darkroom in a very complex process that had to be done in complete darkness. I still have some of those prints! Recently I set about scanning all my old 35mm slides using a wooden contraption that I built to hold my camera in position as I moved each slide in front of the lens in turn. Many happy hours!

I was reminded of that when uploading some of my best current photos of Cornwall in the South-West of England, to my new portfolio site at Pictorem. We visited the lovely little fishing village of Boscastle on the north coast and I made some photographs of that beautiful day:

Looking back through my slides, I came across some images of the same place taken in 1977! Boscastle had a massive flood in 2004 that ravaged a lot of the village, and you will be able to see the new construction work that took place to rebuild the riverbanks and avoid such damage in the future. Here is Boscastle as it was in the 1970s (and probably was for a few hundred years before that!)

This is obviously a view from the village towards the harbor (or harbour as it is spelled in the UK). What is also very noticeable is the massive increase in quality of today’s cameras and perhaps there is also some increase in the skills of the photographer during those years!

Looking down on the harbor, nothing much seems to have changed:

But back to today. If you ever get a chance to visit the UK, please take the time to leave London and see some of the far-flung areas of the country. This lovely village is perhaps an eight-hour drive from London but the sights and scenery in this part of the world are magnificent.

I will be adding many more images of the UK to my portfolio in the coming weeks, so please check that collection out from time to time!
